“Let’s see…” James had successfully caught Phanpy and Gligar. Jessie, Trapinch and Numel. Why was this list seeming so long? This would really be easier with the other two, but what was a Rocket to do? Jessie had business of her own to worry about, and Meowth was going ‘on an adventure!’

…”We can do this by ourselves! Right Abra?”

The psychic just looked at him. Or at least aimed her head in his direction. She wouldn’t be opening her eyes for some time.

Well, if they didn’t need to rescue Meowth anymore, there was no reason not to take care of the pokemon who were from this region first. “Hey! One of these is right next to us!” Which meant they could walk! Or to put it more accurately, it meant James could walk, and Abra would go along for the ride. ”You know… you’re lucky route 205 is really close… or there’s no way I’d be carrying you! Mmph, Abra, not on my face!”

With Abra crawling around James’ head as she pleased, the walk to their destination seemed much longer—and hotter—than it actually was. James slowed to a near crawl, hunched over with his arms dangling, while Abra gave the route a pleased inspection and then took it upon herself to teleport off of James’ shoulders.

You really need to evolve so you can walk, James whined in his head. As he straightened up to get a good look around, James rubbed the back of his neck to try to ease the pain. “There’s sure to be one around here somewhere…”

Sure enough, a West Sea Shellos made its way over the edge of a bank, just coming out of the water. Droplets oozed down its body, but the Pokemon didn’t seem to care that it was still dripping wet.

“Perfect!” James was pretty enthusiastic about the sight. Less searching for him! “Quick Abra, use Psychic!” This Shellos should be a weak one, if he remembered correctly. It was the perfect time to try to improve her new move.

Abra scrunched up her face and extended her hand. A magenta light outlined her hands as well as her target, as she did her best to lift it high into the air. Shellos squirmed unhappily, thrashing about in the air. It tried its best to break its bond and… succeeded. The pink Shellos fell to the ground with a resounding squish, but looked relatively unscathed. It attacked with Water Pulse, sending a sphere of water larger than its own head hurling at Abra, who was much less pleased to be wet.

James was fortunate. The secondary effect of confusion didn’t hit this time. Abra shook herself off, and waited for her next order. “Hidden Power!”

Piece of cake. Abra had that attack down. Much like Shellos, Abra formed a ball of ice in front of her, sending it hurling once it was large enough. Abra was exceedingly pleased to land the hit, but the same couldn’t be said for Shellos, who already seemed tired.

“One more, Abra!”

The psychic obliged, forming yet another frosty sphere with her hands. She sent it flying just as the last one, but it collapsed midway to the target, covered in mud on the ground.

“Huh?”

“Sheee-hehehehelos!”

Wait was it mocking them? It was! It was unmistakably laughing at them!

“What? We’ll show you to laugh at us! Use Psychic!”

Abra nodded and focused on her target. Once it was engulfed in Psychic’s light, Abra clinched her fists tight and thought of nothing else. Shellos looked like it could be suffocating. It writhed in the air before it found itself being sent flying into a nearby tree. Just like that, its laughter was silenced.

“Right!” James pulled out one of the many Pokeballs he’d brought along and tossed it at the Shellos. It bounced off of the Pokemon only slightly as it opened up and pulled it in with its red beam. James clinched his fists with a smile, anticipating the ping that represented a successful capture. Just three shakes, and the ball stopped moving. The Rocket Agent smiled and picked up the now-full Pokéball.

“We did it! Now there’s only five left!”

Abra smiled at James and took his hand. Where to next?

James crossed his arms, not really sure what to say. Though it was plain to see that he was thinking very hard about the situation. “That does sound like a good plan…” but it meant no Meowth for… ten years? James knew how he felt about that, but… “What did Jessie think?”

“I ain’t talked to Jess ‘bout it yet, and I don’t intend on leavin’ you guys in the dark for ten years. Dat was just an example! I couldn’t possibly see myself ever being TOO far away from the two of you!” If he really tried, he could purr right about now. He almost wanted to purr.

“It’s just one trip. Hey, who knows? If you two finish early and all dat, maybe you can snoop on us and make sure nothing goes wrong for da Little Boss.”

“Ha! Of course not!” James put his hands on his hips and stuck his nose in the air proudly, hiding his relief unnecessarily. Suddenly James seemed to care about Meowth’s adventure wholeheartedly. “We could? He doesn’t even know us… what if that ruins it?”

This was a star case and example of just how selfish and greedy Meowth could get. “Jus’ picture it for a minute, would ya?” He took a deep breath, exhaling slowly, a smile spreading on his feline face.

“It’s ten years from now, da Boss is only a few years short of KARP (the Kanto Association of Retired People) membership, and he ain’t got no one in his family to continue the tradition of staying sky high inside Team Rocket! He inherited his post from his ma, an’ his son don’t want nothing to do with it.”

From what he’d gathered on Silver, that was very true.

“But what if Silver had someone around who told him Team Rocket ain’t so awful if you’re on da right side? He’d be rightfully next in line, dat’s what, or could at least take charge as an Executive! He’s smart enough for it, definitely! Da Boss can retire, knowing his son has seen the light, and you know what he’ll say?”

He did his best (worst) impersonation and grinned. “Thanks to that marvelous Meowth, I reconnected with my son and he can pick up where I left off. And you know what Silver will say?” He impersonated again, this time even worse. Meowth battled his eyes, wiggled his hips, and stood on his tip toes. “But Daddy-kins, I really am going to need a Top Cat to keep me company, right? Meowth, how would you want to—”

Was it possible to cut himself off? Because he did it anyway, back to his normal voice. “I WOULD! And you know something, Silver? I’d tell him. My first request at Top Cat would be to promote my best friends in the whole wide world as your shiny new Executives! What could POSSIBLY go wrong?”

James could only blink at this. The Boss had a teenager? And Meowth was leaving… them? He was a whole new level of confused right now. Not that he’d expected the Boss to open up about his family life, but…

“W-wait… he invited you? What if he likes you?” Meowth wasn’t gonna stay with Silver forever… right?

Jessie was glad she was finally working with James again. It wasn’t quite the same when they were working separately. Still, she missed Meowth. He was an important part of their team, though she’d never tell him that.

“Abra? You caught an Abra?” Jessie was impressed. An Abra was definitely useful, especially since they had to travel so much. No more robots for them!

She smiled, seeing Abra hug James. Jessie had forgotten how much fun it was to travel with him. She started to giggle quietly, but hurriedly stopped, focusing again on their mission. “So, James,” she asked, “when are we going?”

Abra responded to Jessie’s question by teleporting on and off of her repeatedly. First her head… then her leg… then her shoulder… James was taken aback by it. “Abra… w-what are you doing?!” The young psychic ceased and landed on the ground in front of him, pushing her fingers together as though to show regret.

“Aha. I found her! She was hungry and alone, so I fed her and brought her with me!” James coughed, embarrassed to say he hadn’t physically caught her. “We’re leaving now!” On his cue, Abra lifted an arm toward each of the humans. James caught her hand, motioning for Jessie to do the same. They weren’t going to be able to go all the way to Unova with Abra, but they could get to an airport with her.

Finally, James had seen Jessie again. They finally started to feel like a team, but they were still missing a key player: Meowth. Their scheming feline dreamer somehow ended up halfway across the world, and the other two weren’t going to be finishing anything without him.

Before they could leave, James had to get his Abra back. Surely she was exhausted. To say their trip had been a long one was a massive understatement; not to mention she’d had a big battle before they’d even gotten moving. Now James was going to have to call on her again, so hopefully Nurse Joy had done her best with Abra.

“Right. Our flight to Unova’s in Jubilife City. We can take Abra there!” James held her Pokeball up proudly in Jessie’s direction. Having Abra was like some form of proof that James could catch something useful, contrary to popular belief.

He released Abra, who greeted him by teleporting right onto the the back of his head and giving him a massive hug. James flailed his arms some, trying to explain to Abra that he couldn’t breathe. But he didn’t need the body language. She could sense as much, and returned to the ground in front of him, rolling her head to the side expectantly. Who was this? Where did he want to go now?

“I’m at a rest stop just outside the Relic Castle,” Meowth informed his business buddy. “You’re probably nowhere close, Jimmy Boy. I lost da map! I have no idea where to go next.”

“You’re in Unova? Geez, Meowth, how’d you get over there?” Had he been thinking efficiently, James would have told him to just stay there and maybe catch the last two. But he was set on going to get the third of the trio, so it didn’t even cross his mind. “I’ll be there in no time, you’ll see!”

That statement had James feeling so confident his head might have visibly grown. “Of course it is! We can talk about it while we finish the mission!”

Meowth blinked, glanced over the list, and then back at the other two. “You mean you knocked out four while I was away? Almost makes it sound like you don’t need me arounds no more!”

“Of coure not! If you were here we’d have six, right?” Maybe even more, since Meowth always managed to produce some magical gadget to get stuff done. James was certain none of them would have blown up if it weren’t for those meddling twerps.
